How safe is Montevideo?

Our visitors tell us that Montevideo feels the safest of any stop on their South American cruise. When cruise ships are in port the city puts many extra police on the street of ciudad viejo. These police have yellow vests with policia turistica and are willing to help with directions and answer questions.
You will be warned about protecting your valuables and electronics on the stops in Chile, Argentina and Brazil. These countries have serious theft problems for visitors. This is not the case in Montevideo.
Of course take reasonable precautions with your money, electronics and valuables when you are in the city.
