What are the best things to do while we are in Montevideo?

The port area is in the ciudad viejo (old city) area of Montevideo. The most interesting activities are a walking tour of the historic and beautiful section of the city, shopping for artisan crafts, eating the local cuisine and trying the wonderful Uruguayan wines.
If these are among your interests, it is not necessary to take a motorized tour. Everything in ciudad viejo is within a 20 minute brisk walk of where the cruise ships dock.
If you want to see more of Montevideo beyond the old city there is are a lot of interesting sites around the city and in the nearby countryside. There are taxis right where you leave the ship that will provide a reasonably priced tour. Please note: local taxis are small and leg room is very limited. If you are taller than about 5'10" or of stock build an extended taxi ride could be quite uncomfortable.
